Overview

OKX, formerly known as OKEx, was founded in 2017 by Star Xu and has grown into one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally by trading volume. The platform rebranded from OKEx to OKX in early 2022 as part of a strategic shift toward becoming a comprehensive Web3 technology company. OKX is now headquartered in Seychelles with significant operations in Dubai.

The exchange supports over 300 cryptocurrencies and offers spot trading, perpetual futures, options, margin trading, and an integrated DeFi ecosystem through the OKX Web3 wallet. OKX has also invested heavily in its self-custody wallet, which aggregates DEX liquidity across multiple blockchains.

Tip

OKX's Web3 wallet is one of the most comprehensive in the industry, supporting over 70 blockchains and integrating DEX aggregation, cross-chain bridges, and DeFi protocol access directly within the exchange app. This creates a seamless bridge between centralized and decentralized trading.

Regulatory Status

OKX has been expanding its regulatory footprint:

  • VARA (Dubai) — Licensed Virtual Asset Service Provider
  • Seychelles — Corporate registration
  • AUSTRAC (Australia) — Registered Digital Currency Exchange
  • MAS (Singapore) — Applied for licensing (pending)
  • No US, UK, or EU major licenses

Warning

OKX was formerly known as OKEx, which experienced a significant incident in 2020 when withdrawals were suspended for approximately five weeks due to the detention of a co-founder in China. While OKX has since distanced itself from its Chinese origins and relocated to Dubai, this history represents a risk factor. The platform is not available to US or UK residents.

Fee Structure

Fee TypeAmount
Spot Maker/Taker (< $100K)0.08% / 0.10%
Spot Maker/Taker (VIP 1)0.06% / 0.08%
Futures Maker/Taker0.02% / 0.05%
Options Maker/Taker0.02% / 0.03%

OKX's fees are competitive, particularly for spot trading where base rates of 0.08%/0.10% undercut most major competitors.

Platform & Tools

  • OKX Exchange — Full-featured trading platform with TradingView charting, advanced order types, and portfolio analytics
  • Futures & Options — Perpetual and expiry contracts with up to 100x leverage, plus European-style options
  • OKX Web3 Wallet — Multi-chain self-custody wallet with DEX aggregator, cross-chain swaps, and DeFi protocol integrations
  • Copy Trading — Social trading feature with trader performance leaderboards
  • Earn — Staking, savings, and structured products
  • Trading Bots — Grid, DCA, arbitrage, and slicing order bots

The platform is well-designed and rivals Binance in terms of feature completeness. The mobile app is one of the best in the crypto exchange space.

Customer Support

  • 24/7 live chat with 5-15 minute response times
  • Email ticket support
  • Help center with extensive documentation
  • Active community channels on Telegram and Discord
  • No phone support

Trustworthiness

OKX's trustworthiness is moderate:

  • Publishes monthly proof-of-reserves reports
  • Dubai VARA licensing adds accountability
  • Has not suffered major security breaches since the rebrand
  • The 2020 withdrawal freeze under the OKEx name remains a historical concern
  • Transparent about fee structures and operational metrics
  • Corporate governance has improved under current leadership

Conclusion

OKX earns a Use With Caution verdict with a score of 6.5. The platform is technically excellent, with competitive fees, comprehensive features, and an innovative Web3 wallet. However, the historical withdrawal freeze, limited Western regulatory licenses, and offshore registration prevent a full recommendation. OKX is best suited for experienced crypto traders outside the US and UK who appreciate the platform's advanced features and are comfortable with the regulatory trade-offs.
